AWeb 1.2 demo
=============
INTRODUCTION
------------
AWeb is a World Wide Web browser for the Amiga computer.
It offers the following features:
o AWeb can use a wide range of TCP-stacks: AmiTCP/IP, I-Net225, AS-225
or compatible. Without TCP stack running, you can still view local files.
o AWeb uses extensive internal multitasking, which leads to total
asynchroneous and parallel network access. Images are starting to load
while the document is still loading. It is possible to follow a link
while the previous document is still loading. A separate network status
window shows all pending network and local file accesses. All network
accesses can be interrupted immediately.
o The HTML-2 standard is fully supported, including forms. Some of
the most important so-called HTML-3 extensions are also supported.
For buggy pages not conforming to the standard, AWeb offers a
compatibility mode.
o AWeb supports the use of proxies for HTTP, FTP, Gopher and Telnet.
Because some proxies can't handle forms or other special cases, the use
of proxies can be temporarily disabled from the menu.
o The HTTP and Gopher protocols are supported internally. By using
external programs, FTP, Mailto, Telnet and News can be used too.
HTTP user authorization is supported.
o AWeb lets you load all images, delay all image loading, or load only
clickable maps and delay other images. For delayed images, the ALT text
is taken into account. Transparent GIFs are supported. The 24-bit picture
datatype (picturedtV43) is supported.
o To improve network speed, host names and network addresses are cached
so addresses are looked up only once during a session.
o AWeb can open it's windows on the default public screen, on a named
public screen or open its own screen.
o AWeb has a hierarchical hotlist, with options to group entries.
In extension to its own hotlist, AWeb can read other hotlists, like
those of AMosaic and early IBrowse betas.
o An advanced settings requester is integrated in the program.
o AWeb has an ARexx interface, and a unique and powerful shell command
interface.
REQUIREMENTS
------------
AWeb needs:
o OS 3.0 or better
o At least 2MB of memory, preferably more
o Either AmiTCP/IP, I-Net225 or AS-225 if you want to access the Internet
o Appropriate picture datatypes (GIF, JPEG) to show inlined images
VERSION 1.2
-----------
This 1.2 version has some improvements compared to the previous 1.1
version:
o Fixed many bugs:
o used to hang on "processing" with some gif images
o moving or closing a window sometimes caused a system lockup
o going back and forward through history simetimes showed wrong
versions of a page, most notably with (search) form responses
o when the temporary directory was PROGDIR:something, external
programs didn't work
o with long rows of images, images were displayed on top of each other
o the output console window of spawned external programs couldn't
be used for input
o Added localization
o Made all unloaded image icons external, and replaceable
o Improved the window history
o Added ALLOWCMD and GET SCREEN ARexx commands
o Added "tolerant" HTML mode, and made HTML mode a proper setting that
is saved
o ... and many other very small changes
DEMO
----
This AWeb 1.2 is a demo for the coming commercial product. The following
features don't work in this demo:
o Multiple windows
o HTML-3.2 support, like backgrounds and centering
o A user-configurable ARexx macro menu
o A hierarchical hotlist with separate hotlist requester
o Telnet: and news: support through external programs
o Option to start your TCP connection automatically when it is needed
The full version of AWeb will be commercially available.
REGISTERED USERS
----------------
For users who have registered AWeb before, special registered versions
will be released along with the coming commercial versions.
Look at <http://www.xs4all.nl/~yrozijn/aweb/> for the latest news.
Registered users should not use this demo version.
Please not that new registrations are no longer possible.
INSTALLATION
------------
To install AWeb, just double-click the Install icon.
NOTE: During installation of AWeb, the installer tool might give an
error message like: "unable to compile script".
This is most likely caused by some misbehaving application installation,
that has copied an obsolete version of the Commodore Installer utility to
your hard drive. Make sure the Installer version in the SYS:C drawer is
"installer_2 2.17 (1993-02-13)" or better. This version can be found on
the Amiga Workbench 3.x Install floppy disk.
Also, delete any copies of the Installer program from your SYS:Utilities
drawer.
If you want to try AWeb before a permanent installation, make sure to
double-click the "MakeAssign" icon first. It makes the necessary assigns
that AWeb needs to find the ClassAct classes.
